the robin williams / homicide - law and order...
if richard belzer’s character munch can travel between homicide: life on the street and law and order: svu, then robin williams’ guest starring, unrelated roles on both homicide and LOSVU would be impossible, creating a black hole of television continuity that proves i watch too much television. munch on the wire is even more paradoxical.

a year ago i read, no, make that, devoured, hemphill’s biography of hank williams. you can read that piece here at the book review page. everything i have to say about his writing is in that piece, or it should be, but to be frank it was fantastic (especially considering that it was a biography, one that read like a novel). it’s terrible that his death only now leads me to seek out his...

thanks to the boys and girls at npr music. this is a really cool album, the mix of electronic and live instruments is captivating. some tracks make better use of it than others, but there are quite a few gems in here (“get older”). theres a word for this … polyrhythmics? is niiice.

i was initially frightened and deeply skeptical when i moved to nyc and first encountered this arcane contraption. but the second time around i was very much won over. my hesitations were asuaged, and turning the big lever was a much more gratifying experience… it’s certainly better than the goddam punch cards and optical scans. long live the lever!

1. Two Lovers - Joaquin’s “last role.” Set in “beautiful” Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, this movie makes living in Bay Ridge more, well, satisfying, and less awful. The story is a terribly unromantic romance, with Joaquin chasing his ideal, Gwyneth as his relapsing mistress of a neighbor, yet also pursuing the good Jewish girl who is fawning over him for insurance....

from defamer’s take on the weekend box office/dvd rental haul:

the bush years →
just finished this great piece from vanity fair. an overarching, candid account of all the major events (read: disasters) of the bush administration, told from the mouths of those involved (axes to grind?). not terribly detailed, but a fine refresher course in idiocy and mismanagement 101.

that rare emotion
tonight, barack obama is accepting the democratic nomination for president of the united states. at this moment, i have never been more proud of my fellow american citizens. i am a cynic by nature; for my first 2 elegible election cycles, not a single candidate i voted for in any national or significant state elections won their seat. ohio also passed an amedment to the state constitution banning...
