Last night I had the pleasure of watching a screener copy of next week’s Season Four premiere of Bones. I’ve never enjoyed Bones. As a big Buffy and Angel fan, I tried to give David Boreanaz’s new show a try; although I can’t say I ever saw Valentine.

Alas, the pilot was enough to turn me off. As I returned to the show last night I recalled why I dropped out, although perhaps with a new list of excuses. Boreanaz is the affable, charming FBI agent Seeley Booth, who just so happens to be embody the traits that I enjoyed so much in the character of Angel, you know, when he wasn’t brooding all over the screen. But, that’s pretty much the end of what I liked about the show. The rest is CSI meets Grey’s Anatomy; too much melodrama, too many pointless science lectures (I’m looking at you NUMB3RS).

This experience, however, was not entirely a loss. Bones was the first screener DVD I’ve ever had the oppurtunity to “screen.” Who knew so many scenery fly-bys were just Getty Images stock shots. Or that the ADR (automated dialogue replacement for you nubes) on preview copies isn’t yet re-recorded in the actor’s own voice, but is that of some husky dude! Look, I get that it’s not the polished edition, but I couldn’t help but chuckle everytime the English lady’s accent disappeared in a voiceover and then jacked up my TV’s volume. Screeners are unintentionally funny. My bad.

As for the episode itself, it had some good lines. All of them Agent Booth’s. The B-Story, involving every other character except Booth and Dr. Bones, numbed my brain, and the slowly picked away all the parts that let me feel pleasure, with a pair of rusty pliers. Hoo-ray! A note to the show’s runners, just give me Booth, and maybe Bones, for like, 22-minute episodes. And leave the science at home. In fact, just hire Joss Whedon and start a new show…oh right, Dollhouse….hey, where’s my Dollhouse screener?
